Stonewards Items: Horn, Pickaxe, Rings & Tomes
A quick reference to the items in Stonewards, covering the horn, pickaxe, rings, tomes, chest loot, resources, and how each item fits into a run.
Last verified: August 19, 2026 — Game version: Stonewards Early Access Hotfix 0.1.5. Facts come from official Steam sources and verified player reports.
Items in Stonewards fall into three groups: tools you always carry, consumables and resources you gather, and power-ups you find in chests. This page is a high-level reference; for detailed guides on individual systems, follow the links in each section.
Equipped Tools
| Tool | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Pickaxe | Mine ore and break rocks during the cave phase |
| Horn | Signals the next wave; some community feedback suggests every class may have a dedicated horn slot |
| Weapon | Melee or ranged; each class starts with a different option |
Loot from Chests
Chests can contain rings, tomes, resources, and scrolls. The chest rarity system was overhauled in Demo Update 0.1.9, and ring/tome descriptions were improved in Hotfix 0.1.4. Treasure chests also emit an audible jingle, which players use to locate hidden rooms through walls (The Boys are Dwarves, 24:32; 45:48; 48:52).
| Item type | Effect |
|---|---|
| Rings | Passive bonuses such as damage, knockback, or resource gain |
| Tomes | Modifiers that can boost rare cave resources or spawn behavior |
| Resources | Metals, ores, and crafting materials |
| Scrolls | One-time or temporary effects introduced in later devblogs |
From Community Gameplay
Observations from recorded runs add concrete details that are not fully spelled out in-game:
- You can equip up to four rings per run. Once the four slots are filled, new rings must replace existing ones, so long-term planning matters (The Boys are Dwarves, 37:46).
- Ring rarity directly affects strength. A higher-rarity ring provides a stronger version of its effect, even if the effect name is not your first choice (The Boys are Dwarves, 04:58).
- Treasure chests drop tomes as books. These books are picked up from the ground after a chest is opened and grant the same kinds of upgrades you see at the Blacksmith (The Boys are Dwarves, 45:27).
- Chests make sound before you see them. The jingle-jangle audio cue is consistent enough that experienced players dig toward it to find secret rooms (The Boys are Dwarves, 48:52).
- Weapons have numeric damage and rarity tiers. Looted weapons range from common to legendary, with higher damage values on higher-tier drops (The Boys are Dwarves, 04:04; 30:22).
Consumables and Drinks
- Healing drinks — restore health and are crafted or purchased with resources such as stone (The Boys are Dwarves, 09:11; 21:19).
- Speed drinks / beer — grant a temporary movement-speed boost, useful for reaching deep ore or returning before the next wave (The Boys are Dwarves, 24:32; 36:26).
- Potions and spells — include one-time scrolls such as ice storm; community feedback says many currently feel underwhelming compared to direct upgrades (The Boys are Dwarves, 24:32; 04:57).
Economy Items
- Gold Coins — gained from kills, mission rewards, and ore; used at the shop.
- Gold bars and ore — can be traded at the shop for potions or converted into experience (The Boys are Dwarves, 50:00).
- Platinum Ore — a higher-tier ore whose icon was fixed in a hotfix.
- Item stack multiplier — a ring/upgrade effect that increases how much of a resource you can carry per inventory slot (The Boys are Dwarves, 31:00; 33:34).
