Stonewards Tools Guide: Pickaxe, Horn & Utility Items
A quick reference to the tools in Stonewards, including the pickaxe, horn, forge utilities, and how each item fits into the mining and defense loop.
Last verified: August 18, 2026 — Game version: Stonewards Early Access Hotfix 0.1.5. Facts come from official Steam sources and verified player reports.
Tools in Stonewards are the items you carry into every run. They are separate from weapons and upgrades and define how you move through the mine and coordinate with your team.
Pickaxe
The pickaxe is your primary mining tool. Every class starts with one and uses it to break ore nodes during the cave phase. Mining speed can be improved through character upgrades, making the Miner the most efficient gatherer.
Horn
The horn signals the transition between phases. The official store description says “before the next horn sounds,” meaning it warns players that the mining phase is ending and the next wave is starting. Community feedback also suggests the horn may be treated as a dedicated class slot similar to the pickaxe.
Torch / Headlamp
The cave environments are dark, and characters are visibly equipped with headlamps. Lighting is part of the atmosphere and may affect how far you can see in side tunnels.
Forge Tools
At the forge you can:
- Craft arrows and ammunition.
- Repair walls and gates.
- Buy randomized upgrades with mined resources.
The Blacksmith level cap was raised to 999 in Hotfix 0.1.5, making long-term upgrades much more impactful.

Gameplay clips show how the actual tools feel in a run:
- The pickaxe heavy swing must be charged for a while to land, so timing your swings matters when the wave timer is tight (The Boys are Dwarves, 08:06).
- Speed drinks are consumable tools that give a temporary movement boost, useful for getting back before the horn (The Boys are Dwarves, 08:44).
- Ballistas act as automated defensive tools; building one can hold a lane while the rest of the team keeps mining (The Boys are Dwarves, 09:25 & 10:45).
- Be careful where you drop items: one player found gear stuck forever after dropping it on the forge mat (The Boys are Dwarves, 10:08).
- Class choice affects tool effectiveness; the Warrior “would suck at mining,” so pick your loadout around whether you plan to dig or fight (The Boys are Dwarves, 10:45).
